Tempe didn’t know if she needed to be suspicious or not. Tanner had sent her a text to meet him at the pond for a picnic and a family photoshoot. At least he didn’t tell her that it was a surprise, as Tempe was not a fan of surprises. Something that she had voiced quite a few times, especially when it came to birthday parties and so on.
She couldn’t tell him no, as they were already having a bit of a hard time spending time with each other lately. Summer and spring were the busy seasons for both, and despite living in the same house – it didn’t mean they had all their meals together. Thankfully, the shop was closed for the day of the picnic. Tempe’s schedule was open – which gave her time to get ready. She showered and dressed in something that was not pants for once. With the weather getting warmer, Tempe needed some movement and freedom.
Her hair fell in its natural curls after a good amount of product and diffusing. A light layer of makeup, but nothing outlandish. She gave herself a small look over before driving to the park. Tempe found the spot Tanner told her to meet. Instead of family, there was a nicely set up picnic table with a light blue tablecloth runner. A vase of wildflowers and two bottles of sparkling apple cider in a chiller. As well as a disposable film camera.
Tempe tilted her head as she slowly approached. On a small plate, a note read, you deserve this! Dammit, her son was about to make her cry. It took her a moment to notice the second place setting across from her. Would it be filled by the person who she hoped it would be?
Even though the store was closed, Kas still had animals that needed a bit of attention, so he stopped off at the store to play with the puppies and kittens. The envelope with his name, sitting by the cash register, caught his attention and he smiled as he opened it and read through an invitation to a picnic. There was, however, no signature. Do you think it's from Tempe?" He asked the African Grey who was sitting on top of the monitor, and then rolled his eyes when the bird started making kissy noises. "Cut it out, Frank!" He said, though laughed at the bird's antics.
After a phone call with his mother, he headed home to change into some smarter looking clothes; black jeans and a polo shirt, rather than the scruffy clothes he'd worn to the store so that he could muck around with animals. When he was happy with how he looked, and he sent his mother a photo for her inspection, he left his flat, with the cheeky bird watching cartoons, and after buying a small bouquet of spring flowers, headed toward the park.
Arriving at the area the invitation had mentioned, he smiled when he saw the table that was set and the woman standing there. "Hi" He greeted with a nervous smile, not quite knowing what to do with the flowers in his hand.

Tempe looked up from playing with the napkin out of nerves. There he was, dapper in jeans and polo. She took a moment to drink the image of a cleaned-up Kas. Not that he looked bad beforehand. After staring like a deer in headlights, Tempe smiled before standing up. “Hello. I see you were also…convinced to come out today,” she smiled. “Well, I’m very thankful that it is you.” Fingers sheepishly pushed some curls out her face.
She felt like a teenager, asking someone to dance. Tempe almost felt like crossing her legs and batting her eyelashes, but she was too old for that. “Can I interest you in a glass of sparkling cider?” she asked. “I’m sure Tanner would hate for it to go to waste.”
Kas returned her smile as he offered her the flowers, knowing that he wasn't made for this kind of thing. "Convinced would be one word for it." He said with a chuckle. "I couldn't think of anyone I would rather have a picnic with." It took all his willpower not to overthink what he'd just said to make sure it had been the right thing, as his parents told him that they knew when he got lost in his head, and he was worried that others might see it too - which is why he always had Frank right there to fly in and save him when his words failed.
He'd skipped all the social awkwardness around the opposite gender when he was a teen, which meant that he was perpetually awkwardness around everyone now that he was an adult, but he did his best to keep control of each situation. "That would be nice, thanks." He said to the offer of a drink. "Ah, so Tanner is the one who set this up?" His lips quirked with a grin. "I might need to give the boy a raise."
